On Tuesday April 18 at 8 p.m. in Alice Tully Hall, the Juilliard String Quartet will be playing Mozart’s “Prussian” Quartet, Shostakovich’s String Quartet no.14, and Brahms’s String Quartet no.3. The Juilliard School’s String Quartet has existed in various incarnations for most of the twentieth century, and is among the seminal examples of the form. Tickets are free at the Juilliard box office. The Manhattan School of Music has a three-day chamber music festival on April 21-23. Friday has a piano chamber music concert at 5 p.m., and a mixed groups concert at 8 p.m. Saturday has a string chamber music concert at 7 p.m., and a Brahms tribute concert at 9 p.m. On Sunday there is a woodwind concert at 3 p.m., vocal music at 5:30 p.m., and mixed chamber music at 8 p.m. See their calendar at www.msmnyc.edu/calendar/ for details. These are free concerts and don’t require tickets. Just show up. On May 9 at 8 p.m., Juilliard has its vocal arts honors recital, made up of students who auditioned for slots in this concert (and at Juilliard, auditions are stressful, competitive nightmares). Tickets are free at the Juilliard box office. The New York City Opera is doing Mozart’s Don Giovanni this month (evening performances on April 15 and 21). Mark the ominous overture, which returns in the last act as the orchestral accompaniment while the Don is dragged off to hell. As usual, see Wikipedia for a more complete account. Student tickets are $16, and they’re not too much more expensive for everyone else. |
