This two credit course is run on a two year cycle, next time in spring 2005. Nine out of eleven students who took this course for credit responded to this survey. Their responses have been compiled below. Comments: Microbial Pathogenesis is “top-notch”, “enlightening”, “edifying and enjoyable”. It provides students with an “astounding” amount of up to date information from the “colorful array” of guest lecturers who are “leaders in the field”. The course content provides a “broad introduction” while still catering to the “microbe aficionado”. The lecture highlight was John McKinney’s talk on the global consequences of microbial disease. Some advise you “make peace with you inner hypochondriac” as the “pre-luncheon lecture images of the human consequences of pathogenic E. coli will leave you ready for that roast beef sandwich!” Some “really enjoyed” the lunchtime journal club discussions, however “be careful about setting up incubations in the lab” as the discussions usually ran over the scheduled timeslot. The written assignments were considered quite “time consuming,” they may aid you to “think more thoroughly about the subject,” but some felt they were “not very helpful”. Take this “great course” and you will be“enthralled” by the many “devious and ingenious ways prokaryotes can cause disease”. It “might make you a convert to microbiology” and it will “definitely make you think twice about ordering your hamburger medium rare”.
